Unforeseen Challenges of Pollinator Toxicity Test Matrices

The U.S. EPA is codifying requirements for toxicity data from laboratory tests with honey bees (Apis mellifera) as part of Tier 1 requirements for the registration of pesticides under the Federal Insecticide, Rodenticide, and Fungicide Act (FIFRA) (listed below).
1. Acute contact, adult honey bee
2. Acute oral, adult honey bee
3. Acute oral (7-day), larval honey bee
4. Chronic (22-day), larval honey bee
5. Chronic (10-day), adult honey bee
This presentation addresses the challenges with feeding matrices in the larval acute and chronic and the
chronic adult honey bee studies. One of the critical issues that has arisen is the new requirement of
analytical confirmation of dosed diets consumed by bees and the challenging matrix issues for both
preparation and analysis.
