Smithers Viscient to Present Data on Planting Density at SETAC Europe

HARROGATE, UK – April 4th, 2019 – Smithers Viscient, a global contract research organization (CRO), today announced that the company’s expert scientists will host a session to discuss planting density and the impact on endpoint sensitivity for the evaluation of plant protection products.

Biologist Ashlee Kirkwood and Ron Biever, Vice President, North American Operations, at Smithers Viscient, will co-host a discussion session titled “Planting density used in non-target terrestrial plant studies and the impact on endpoint sensitivity: A case study”. The session will include a presentation of results and an open-forum discussion.

Planting density used for non-target plant exposures has become an emerging topic over the past few years, particularly as regulatory agencies move to require lower planting densities. OECD TG 227 allows for higher planting densities when conducting exposures but contains limited instruction on when to apply the option.  Higher planting densities may be more attractive for several reasons, including management of resources and physical capacity, as well as known historical performance and ability to meet acceptability criteria. To determine if the lower planting densities referenced in the guidance demonstrated a difference in endpoint sensitivity, two different planting densities were evaluated in vegetative vigor style exposures using a generic herbicide.

“I am delighted to have our experts present Planting density data and share this scientific research with colleagues from around the Globe”, commented Ron Biever, Vice President, North American Operations, Biever continues, “The data provides a benchmark for more meaningful discussions around sensitivity of different planting densities and different experimental replication”.

Smithers Viscient will host the complimentary luncheon and discussion session at SETAC, Helsinki, Finland, Wednesday 29th May, 12.00-13.00pm – Meeting room 214
