The role

The job holder will study direct Physical Chemistry and 5-Batch Analysis studies in accordance with UK and OECD GLP and following the latest test guidelines. As Study Director, they are responsible for ensuring that the studies are conducted to the required standard and for approving the data. The Study Director is the single point of study control and has overall responsibility for the scientific, technical and regulatory conduct of studies allocated to them, as well as for interpretation, documentation and reporting of results.
The job holder is expected to be part lab-based, part office-based, integrating daily contact with laboratory personnel with developing and coaching team members.  Frequent interaction with Quality Assurance and Business Leads will be part of this role.  A high degree of client communication and knowledge of testing requirements will be required for this role. 

Further duties of the role will include:

  • Ensuring that studies are performed in accordance with the study protocol and the Smithers Viscient (ESG) Ltd. standard operating procedures and required scientific and regulatory standards
  • Demonstrate in-depth and up to date knowledge of UK/OECD GLP regulations, as applicable
  • Be aware at all times of study status and anticipate problems that may affect timing, quality etc, identifying a need for appropriate action to resolve such problems
  • Ensure all study communication is documented and maintained and carried out to meet client requirements
  • Exhibit knowledge of customer requirements and assist planning accordingly (timelines, critical deadlines etc)
  • Ensure that all studies are archived according to current SOP
  • Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of physical-chemical tests, so that he/she will be able to advise internal/external clients on study designs
  • Ensure on-time delivery targets (protocols, results, reports) and assist others in the group in achieving these
  • Assist with organising and hosting client visits (internal and external)
  • Understand and apply the study costing process and financial/resource issues. Assist in the costing and quotation of assigned studies, where required
  • Ensure the master schedule is updated for their assigned studies
  • Understand existing departmental procedures and systems, and drive process improvements
  • Develop teamwork with study team, Sales and Marketing group, Quality Assurance and other departments
  • Support and encourage the development of team members
  • Constructively participate in departmental meetings, scheduling etc.
 
The person
 
  • The job holder will be a graduate with minimum 5 years study directing experience in the Phys-Chem/5-Batch Analysis area.  Additionally, the job holder may have gained some client management experience in a previous role.
  • Relevant experience may be substituted for academic qualifications.
  • Ability to design and execute experiments in accordance with SOPs and regulatory guidelines.
  • Experience in writing and reviewing regulatory scientific reports.
  • Ability to review and critically evaluate current publications relating to work area.
  • Concise and effective verbal and written communication skills with internal and external personnel.
  • Skilled in the use of word processing, databases, spreadsheets, and specialised software.
